The center of the city is the old town area with the over 750 year old town church, the market square redesigned in 1992 with the town hall built as a residential building from 1882 and the town houses, some of which have been renovated as part of the urban development subsidy. This old town area is separated in a west-east direction by Bergstrasse and Thulboden and in a south-north direction by Mühlenstrasse and Brückstrasse. In the center and in the area of the harbor you can find well-preserved houses from past centuries.

The present-day town hall building is the city villa built in 1882 by the well-known shipowner J. P. Massmann in the market square in a representative Wilhelminian style, which was acquired by the city of Heiligenhafen in 1926 as a town hall. The "Bütt" (duck whale) moved again with and was again attached over the town hall door. In July 1980, however, the carefully prepared Butzkopf tail fin was stolen - probably by an ill-considered boy's prank - and unfortunately not returned.

Today, a wood reproduction carved by Erwin Schröttke decorates the town hall door again. Underneath, hung in golden letters, is the good-natured, low-German mockingbird of an unknown craftsman who made fun of Heiligenhafener:

      "Hillgenhaven, bless it, you're up.
      An'n Radhus, sigh, hang Bütt.
and the ship drills se dor with power,
Give me a hand, sail, and sail. "
