The Protestant faith came into being in the 16th century. The Margrave of Thuringia and Meissen converted to the new teaching. The Catholic Cathedral of Meissen now belonged to the Protestants.
The bones of Saint Benno have so far rested in the cathedral. The Margrave gave it to his cousin, Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria. He had the relics of Saint Benno transferred from Meissen to Munich. They were buried in a silver coffin in the Frauenkirche.
