The chapel, standing in the shade of a mighty linden tree, is a lively expression of the private piety of the late Baroque. Around 1750, the town of Lauringen citizen Bernhard Bauer built the first chapel; The current building was built towards the end of the 19th century and was inaugurated on June 30, 1901 under the patronage of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Today a hawthorn hedge surrounds the chapel, which stands romantically in the shade of an old linden tree. The linden bench invites visitors to take a break and enjoy the wonderful view of the Haßberge and the Rhön.

The Kerlach chapel above Stadtlauringen can be seen from afar. A path with the 14 Stations of the Cross leads up to the little church on the Kerlachberg. Patronage of the chapel is Mariae Pain. This memorial of the Suffering Mother of God is observed on September 15th. Saint Aloysius was given to the church as a further patron saint. We celebrate his festival on June 21st. After a thorough renovation in 2001, the 100th anniversary of the construction of this little church of grace could be celebrated. Numerous believers come to the May prayers, to pray the Rosary or with personal prayer requests to the Sorrowful Mother on the Kerlachberg. It is also on the "Franconian Marienweg". The chapel is open on Sundays and public holidays from Easter to All Saints' Day.
