If you can have the ultimate border experience anywhere, it is in the twin villages of Dinxperlo (NL) - Suderwick (D), also called Dinxperwick by the locals. The national border runs along the curb of the border road across the two villages. This border has had a major impact on life on both sides. It is logical that many exciting but also tragic events have taken place here. The border is very old. However, border stones were not set until 1766. From 1816 to 1993 the national border is also a customs border. Suddenly there are border control officers, called "Kommiesen", and the residents are increasingly harassed with all kinds of regulations and controls. But money is also made from the smuggling trade. The Grensland Museum, which is housed in a beautiful 18th century building, tells visitors stories about life on the border. Experience the creation of this border, the work of the customs officers, the enormous impact of the world wars, trade on and with the border and the current cooperation between the two villages. The collection consists of authentic material such as: documents, photographs, uniforms, customs equipment, contraband, confiscated goods and weapons, smugglers' tricks and recorded stories. The Grensland Museum also presents thematic temporary exhibitions and offers guided tours. (grenslandmuseum.nl/de/home-de/)
