Later, however, it was realized that this Frederick had nothing to do with the town's founding and that it had been an embarrassing mistake. The artwork was therefore removed in 1942 and melted down for the war effort.
After 1945, the site was frequently altered by the addition of fountains.
The current design of the site dates from 1997.
