The Einödmühle was built by Heinrich von Stein in the 13th century. In 1385 the Nuremberg patrician family Stromer owned the mill. According to the commercial register that Nuremberg had created in 1544, it was called "Mühl an der torenden Leiten", because the Roth could become a torrential river here during high water, or "Loesmül/Leßmühl" after the miller Cunz Leßmeister, who was probably sitting here at the time . Karl Kugler, however, interprets the mill name "without a doubt" as "mill on the dam, mill with a dam, from leo (genitive lewes) for hlaiv, dam, hill."[
