St. Michael's Church is the main church of Kuurne and at the same time also the oldest church. The first mention of the church dates from 1146. The very first church was built of wood. Later the wooden church was replaced by a stone church in Romanesque style. Near the stone church was also a walled cemetery. The stone church was also – after numerous repairs – finally demolished in 1876. The building you see today dates from 1878 and was built in neo-Gothic style by architect Arthur Croquison.

This church is dedicated to Archangel Michael, the name (from the Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often depicted - in paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword or lance. Along with Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel, Michael is one of the four archangels who (according to human conception) hold the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is September 29th.

At the back of the church is a memorial stone for Brigand's Sunday, a bloody day in the uprising against the French occupiers. The slogan under which the uprising was waged, "Voor Outer en Heerd" (For Outer and Hearth), is written above the names of five Kuur residents who fell on October 28, 1798.
At the front right of the church, you can see foundations excavated in 1985 and possibly dating back to the 12th century.
