At the end of the 19th century, three new beacons were erected at the mouth of the Elbe. The front light also called the "slender Anna", with its two front lights in Altenbruch (Big Berta) and Neufeld Deich. They should guide seafarers safely through the difficult Elbe fairway. Modern navigation technology replaced the three beacons at the end of the 20th century and thus led to the fires going out. However, a citizens' initiative prevented the demolition of Fat Berta, whose steel body was actually supposed to be scrapped. Unfortunately, her sisters, the lower light in Neufeld and the upper light "slender Anna" in Groden, were not so lucky (source: cuxland.de/poi Leuchtturm-dicke-berta).
