  • The Kreuzkirche or town church in Joachimsthal is a post-Reformation Protestant church of the 18th century on the preferred hunting ground of the Elector of Brandenburg. The church is used by the Protestant parish Joachimsthal.
The church was built according to the plans of the Brandenburg construction inspector Eichler in the period from 1735 to 1738 as a classical plaster. It replaced the predecessor building of a baroque half-timbered church dating back to 1609. ... As early as 1740, a church tower was set in front of the middle of the south side of the church. Through this extension, the church received the cross-shaped floor plan, after it is named today on the one hand, on the other hand classified as typical of the Kreuzkirche.
When the fire on April 20, 1814, the church was severely damaged and restored to plans by the Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel 1817-1820. At the same time, the structure was transformed into a neo-Gothic style according to contemporary tastes. To emphasize in this context is the renunciation of the church tower in favor of the bell gable between two corner turrets. A further conversion took place in the GDR times 1969/70: The church space experienced for the first time an alignment to the east, because the northern cross arm as winter church and the southern cross arm were prepared as sacristy.

On the horseshoe-shaped gallery is the organ with its classical organ prospectus, it was built in 1820 by the organ builder Johann Tobias Turley from Treuenbrietzen, 1909 but greatly changed by Albert Kienscherf. The further equipment of the church space was created after the remodeling of the interior from 1969 in 1974 by the sculptor Elly-Viola Nahmmacher. The Kreuzkirche was restored in the period before the reunification in the years 1987-1990.
