Absolutely worth seeing the geological history on site. Clearly explained with information boards

The sea of rocks near Nieder-Ofleiden was created in different geological ages. In the older Tertiary - about 40 million years ago - mighty sandbanks were initially deposited here, which in later periods were partially covered by the volcanic rock masses of the Hohe Berg. In the later Tertiary - about 3 to 4 million years ago - there were further deposits due to constant flooding.
From the mostly pebbly layers a mighty stone bank formed, which thousands of years later was washed under by a stream like a notch. Increasingly, a hollow space was created, so that the formerly continuous stone bench collapsed and remained as a "sea of rocks" on the slopes of the valley.
