The Humboldt penguin was first scientifically described in 1834 by Franz Julius Ferdinand Meyen. According to Meyen, the penguin was named after its first discoverer, Alexander von Humboldt, who is said to have observed this species during his trip to America in 1799-1804 in the area around Callao in present-day Peru
