The small mill in Niederkumbd is the only one in the community with a working grinding mechanism. The mill festival takes place on the second Sunday in September, when the mill is put into operation. The interior can also be visited.

The mill was built in 1848 and operated as a cooperative mill until it was sold to the municipality of Niederkumbd in 1952.

After hardly any flour was ground anymore, the company finally stopped in 1969 - until then it was still crushed (less finely ground, for animal feed). The mill was left to its own devices for almost 30 years, until 1995, as part of the Südwestfunk's "Macht mit" (Might With Me) series, repairs by the villagers began in a one-week renovation campaign. Another two years passed before the heart of the mill, the grinder, was functional again.

You will find the small mill when coming from the direction of Simmern

a few hundred meters before entering Niederkumbd. It was built in 1848 and operated as a cooperative mill until it was sold to the municipality of Niederkumbd in 1952.

      ...

In particular, the reconstruction of the mill wheel, which had rusted and become rotten over time, was a task that was not easy to solve. More than 1,500 screws give the construction made of galvanized iron and solid oak new stability. After the mill race was also opened, the water-powered mill wheel could be set in motion again for the first time in 1997. Since then, the mill in Niederkumbd has been the only one in the community with a functioning grinding mechanism.

Once a year you can experience the Niederkumbder mill in action: on the second Sunday in September the mill festival takes place, where the grinding mill is put into operation. The interior can also be visited. Visitors are treated to delicious Hunsrück dumplings and in the afternoon there are cakes baked by the women of the village. A supporting program is offered to entertain the little guests.

The mill can also be opened and set in motion for groups on other dates by prior arrangement.
