Top cycling routes to Spey Dam Reservoir

Tips

  • Lying on the western edge of the Cairngorms National Park, the Spey Dam and Reservoir offer a scenic and peaceful place to cycle, with a quiet, waterside road and glorious mountain views. Together, they comprise the upper-most part of the Lochaber Hydro-Electric Power Scheme. Built by the British Aluminium Company in 1944, the scheme is now owned and operated by multi-national group Alcan. The River Spey was dammed at this point, 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Newtonmore, to create an extensive reservoir, with a canal connecting the reservoir to Loch Crunachdan and a further tunnel channeling water into Loch Laggan.
