The Pankratius Chapel is an emergency church in Gießen that was built in 1949 according to plans by the church architect Otto Bartning. The hall church in timber truss construction with a five-eighth note has largely been preserved in its original condition and is a Hessian cultural monument. The nearby late Gothic tower of the Gießen town church, which was destroyed in 1944, belongs to the Pankratius parish and serves as its bell tower.

According to tradition, Saint Pancratius, to whom this Gießen chapel is dedicated, was publicly executed at the end of the 3rd / beginning of the 4th century under Emperor Diocletian because of his Christian faith. The body of the martyr was buried on the Roman Via Aurelia - in the catacombs later named after him - under today's church "San Pancrazio".
The memorial day of Saint Pancratius is on May 12, he is one of the three so-called "Ice Saints" in popular piety, together with Servatius and Bonifatius (in some areas the "Cold Sophie" is added a day later).

In 1248, a chapel was first mentioned in documents at this location. In 1944, the town church was destroyed and the emergency church was built from the rubble in 1949.The name emergency church refers to the time and not to the construction, which is actually very solid.
