The church in Hümmel was first mentioned in 1114. The core of the old parish church, demolished in 1870, was probably built in the Romanesque period and later rebuilt in the Gothic style. Already in 1745 this church was described as dilapidated. The tower was rebuilt in the 1790s and the occupation of the Rhineland during the French Revolution prevented the construction of the new nave. In 1868 the church was closed by the building authorities because of the danger of parts of the vault falling down and a new building was proposed by the district master builder August Clotten. He drew up the plans for the new church, which was built in 1871/72. A collection in the Catholic communities of the Rhine province made it possible to finance the construction.
The church was built as a three-nave stepped hall with three bays. The central yokes are recognizable as avant-corps. These have large tracery windows and are accented by a pediment. The eastern church closes with a choir closed on three sides, flanked by a chapel (left) and the sacristy (right).
