Today the municipal music school “Johann Nepomuk Hummel” is housed here.

The U-shaped building designed by the architect Clemens Wenzelaus Coudray is largely due to the initiative of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who advocated that Weimar should have an elementary school. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the reign of Grand Duke Carl August in 1825, the “citizen school” was inaugurated.

When the school opened, a wooden pumping fountain initially adorned the forecourt. The figure, originally made as a cast zinc ("Boy with the Gospel"), was replaced by a gold-plated aluminum alloy during a fountain restoration in 1987.

The princely house in Weimar, built by the architect Anton Georg Hauptmann according to plans by the princely master builder Johann Gottfried Schlegel, was completed in 1774. This happened just in time to accommodate the Weimar court, because the Weimar city palace almost completely burned down that year.

Today's music school "Johann Nepomuk Hummel" was the first public public school in Weimar. It goes back to Goethe's suggestion. The building was built between 1822 and 1825 under the architect Clemens Wenzelaus Coudray. In the meantime a commercial school, the building complex has served as a music school since 1957. Since 2016 she has been called Johann Nepomuk Hummels. The composer and pianist came from Pressburg / Bratislava (born in 1778). He received music lessons from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Vienna. From 1819 he was court music director to the Dukes of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Hummel also died in Weimar in 1837 and is buried in the historical cemetery.
