Also called Porta Garibaldi, Porta San Lorenzo is the smallest of the access gates of the Venetian walls to the upper city of Bergamo. The roadbed here is cobbled.

The Porta di San Lorenzo connects the fortified city with the countryside of "Val Tegete" (Valtesse) and constitutes the exit towards the "Via Priula" which will supplant the "Via Mercatorum".

It was erected to replace the original door, which is located exactly below the one visible today.

The old gate was closed by the Venetians in 1605 because it was not very defensible and subject to frequent flooding caused by the abundant waters that flowed here from the local springs.

In 1627 the viaduct and the new gate were built to allow the inhabitants of the valley and neighboring towns to pass through (upon payment of 4,000 gold ducats to the Serenissima).

Times change but those who pay are always the same...

The attached photos show how the gate itself was rebuilt over the previous one, the existence of 2 pitches on the access viaduct to allow the simultaneous passage of 2 wagons (now one pitch no longer exists because it has been demolished).
Additional photos of the gate in 1899, 1935 and today.

Built in 1563, the original Porta S. Lorenzo is located exactly below the existing one, in the lower part of the current viaduct.

It was walled up in 1605 for safety reasons, as it was difficult to defend against external attacks and was continually flooded in case of rain.

It was subsequently rebuilt above it in 1627, opening a gap in the walls with the construction of the S. Lorenzo door, designed by Francesco Tensini.

The entire supporting structure of the bridge has recently undergone a conservative restoration and the trickle of water that flowed underneath has been appropriately diverted to avoid possible static compromises of the bridge.

Behind the door, internally, there is a small barracks for the garrison, while externally there is a spring fountain that conveys the water
