The river Orb was always flooding, the keelless barges from the Canal du Midi ran the risk of shipwreck about it 1858, the canal bridge was opened. Since then, the barges have been traveling across the river at a height of 12 meters on the canal bridge. The canal bridge with its width of 28 meters spans a length of 240 meters. In order to build them, the canal was diverted from the seventh lock chamber of Fonseranes.
