The spacious palace complex, located in the middle of the city, is divided into the front and the back of the castle. The three-storey tower connects with its gateway both castle areas. Especially the back castle with its arcades refers to the Renaissance, whose contemporaries were the builders of the noble family of the Lords of Dieskau.
Today, the castle serves as the seat of the city administration and can not be visited from the inside.

In a document from 1282, a “Dominus Heinemanus de Vynsterwalde” appears as the first documented lord of the castle. In the 14th and early 15th centuries, the castle was the seat of a robber baron named von Gorenzen, who attacked travelers on the trade routes in the area from here. The construction-loving noble family von Dieskau, who took possession of the castle in 1533, is credited with completing the building, which has largely survived to this day.
Today the castle is the property of the city and the seat of the city administration.
