Just a short walk from Augustusburg Castle in Brühl, on the edge of a secluded forest, another attractive sight is the Falkenlust hunting lodge, one of the preferred hunting lodges of the Elector of Cologne and Archbishop Clemens August (1700/-61).

In just a few years between 1729 and 1737, one of the most intimate and precious creations of the German Rococo was created according to the plans of the Bavarian court architect François de Cuvilliés.

The Falkenlust hunting lodge, which was acquired from private ownership by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, has been open to the public as a museum since 1974.

Falconry is presented in a clear and informative manner in the outbuildings. The way the falconers live and work is shown in the falconer's room, which is furnished true to the original.

Falkenlust Castle was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1984 together with Augustusburg Castle as an example of a uniquely preserved Rococo work of art in Germany.

From 1730 onwards, a chapel dedicated to Maria Aegyptiaca was built in the Falkenlustbusch in the immediate vicinity of the hunting lodge, which was designed by Peter Laporterie in the form of an astonishing hermit grotto with shells, minerals and crystals.

The castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust - also a World Heritage Site - with the beautiful park invite you to hike and linger on historic ground
