On this hill planted with sacred oaks, there was a Druidic place of worship. Around 1100, a hermit built a cell. This became a small Benedictine abbey, consecrated on September 21, 1109. A century later, it was elevated to a collegiate status and existed until the French Revolution. The village of Saint Leonard, already famous for its Pinot Noir wine, was the residence of six to twelve secular canons. The abbey served as a resting place for pilgrims making their way to Mount Odilienberg. The monastery was plundered in 1525 during the Peasants' War. It was devastated in 1622 during the Thirty Years' War and then rebuilt in 1632. During the Revolution, St. Leonard was sold, its church dismantled, and partially rebuilt in Ergersheim. In 1860, Victor Laugel and his son Anselme had the current houses built. With their friend Charles Spindler, they founded the St. Leonard group, an artists' meeting place that is still well known in Alsace today.
