In the mid-20th century, the Kerkrade coal mines discharged their polluted wastewater into the surrounding waterways. These included the Ham and Domaniale mines. They used the Anstelerbeek stream for this purpose. After the mines closed, measures were taken to improve the surrounding area. One of these measures was the construction of a hiking area, which includes this reservoir.

Hiking

The Cranenweyer (also Cranenweijer) is located near Kerkrade and is fed by the Amstelbach stream (also Anstellerbeek or Anselderbeek) and several springs. It is the only reservoir in the Netherlands! This is why it is sometimes called Stuwmeer (i.e., reservoir). Directly adjacent to the 20-hectare reservoir, which was built in the 1970s, are other small ponds, all collectively known as Cranenweyer. This local recreation area is now part of the "Gravenrode Park."
This viewpoint is located on a hiking trail on the right bank of the Cranenweyer and offers a wonderful view over a large part of the lake.
