When you drive unsuspectingly to Het Verdronken Bos and pass this residential tower on the Schalkwijkse Wetering, you immediately see that this residential tower is not just any tower. Residential tower Vuylcop is probably one of the oldest houses in the municipality of Houten. It was largely built in the 14th century. It provided protection for surrounding farms that were sometimes besieged in that area.Later a castle was made of it: Vuylcop Castle. The residential tower was then given outbuildings, towers and an access bridge. Unfortunately they are all gone. In 1538 Vuylcop was recognized as a knight's court town (meaning that a knight lived there). There was also a floor on the residential tower, but it was removed again in 1800 due to subsidence. The residential tower has now been restored. He stands there along the road, in a remote part of the Netherlands, in peace. With a rich history and volumes full of stories we don't know. You can't go in or on it (only on Monument Day), but take your time and view the tower. What will have played here?text: nederlandsglorie.nl
