With its 25 meter high bell tower, the Dolder was the city's upper gate and part of the original fortifications. The fountain in front of the Dolder Tower (Fontaine de la Sinne) was originally used to check the capacity of wine barrels. Hence the name, the measuring well.

The Dolder was built in 1291. The 25 meter high tower served as a clock tower, watchtower and city gate. The Dolder is the most famous monument (building) of Riquewihr. It was built together with the first city wall. Over the centuries, it has managed to preserve its aspect, with a sober outer facade to distract intruders and an inner facade with an ornate bay window. Top-notch craftsmanship.
