The mighty building of the Cathedral of Santa Maria dominates the cityscape very predominantly. It is the most important Gothic building on the island and was completed in 1342. Originally a mosque stood in this place. The building material, a light sandstone, comes directly from the quarries of the island. The single-nave church is framed by 12 chapels. Particularly impressive is the interior with the high ribbed vault.
