In the "Stevol" nature reserve, a herd of Galloways and a herd of Konik horses are allowed to roam freely. The hiking trail often runs right through these herds, which is quite adventurous.

The nature reserve originated from the "Stevol" area.

The STEVOL project was the gravel mining area near Stevensweerd and Ohé en Laak. The project was in the planning phase between 1989 and 1992. In 1995, excavation and dredging of sand and gravel began. This project also included the construction of the T31 bridge linking the Echt and Stevenswerd bridges.

After the dredging, the entire area was renaturalized.
