Those who are enthusiastic about the sky and the stars are in the right place at the Thuringian State Observatory Tautenburg Karl Schwarzschild Observatory.

The observatory was established in 1960. The most important astronomical observation instrument of the observatory is the Alfred-Jensch-Telescope, put into operation in 1960, a 2-m reflecting telescope with a spherical primary mirror, which was manufactured by Carl Zeiss in Jena. It is the largest telescope on German soil next to the Fraunhofer telescope (as of 2012). It can also be used as a Schmidt camera for astrophotography. Several exoplanets and brown dwarfs have been discovered or assisted in their discovery with the help of the Alfred Jensch telescope.

In addition to the reflecting telescope, the observatory also has a radio telescope in the form of two antenna arrays. This is part of LOFAR (Low Frequency Array), a radio interferometer, in which the signals of several LOFAR stations distributed all over Europe can be combined into one signal to enable a high angular resolution.

The two telescopes cannot be seen from the observatory's entrance as they are located towards the back of the observatory's premises. The Alfred Jensch Telescope can be visited every 1st Thursday of the month at 4 p.m. The observatory is offering a public guided tour for individuals on this date. For groups, the guided tour is offered on weekdays by prior arrangement.

The observatory offers an "Open Day" or a "Long Night of the Stars" once a year (alternating from year to year). The open house usually takes place in May/June while the long night of the stars usually takes place in October. The exact date will be announced on a notice board at the entrance to the observatory and on the TLS Tautenburg website. The Alfred Jensch telescope and the LOFAR antenna field can be visited at these events. The employees of the observatory give an insight into the work of the observatory and are happy to provide information about the current and already completed projects. Lectures on astronomical topics are also held in the research building. A visit to the observatory for these events is always worthwhile.
