A steam-powered shovel excavator was used for the first time in this part of the company to remove the overburden. This means that the lorries were loaded directly from the excavator. After the southern half of the mine area had been mined, part of this overburden was used to build up a dam between the already exploited and the opencast mines still in operation. Thanks to this dam construction, almost half of the pit area could be filled with the resulting sludge from the Weickartshain ore wash. Trees and bushes still make the course of the dam visible today.
