Here, north and south of the former Neugrünende Hoffnung opencast pit, there are numerous circular hollows in the forest, which indicate earlier mining activities in civil engineering.
These depressions, called pings, are sometimes more than a meter deep and occasionally have a diameter of several meters, but they are mostly rather shallow and only small in extent. For the most part, they are very close together, which is an indication of the shaft-by-shaft mining method.
