Over the course of millions of years, the Upper Rhine Graben was filled with gravel. During the ice ages, extensive layers of clay formed in the edge zones of the Rhine with calmed currents. Alluvial sand was deposited on top. At the end of the last ice age, a blanket of drifting sand formed. Since then, the flow of the Rhine has deepened into the post-Ice Age terrain and formed today's Rhine lowland with a Rhine bank up to 15 meters high.

You can no longer see any of the clay pits, only the depressions in the forest floor next to the path give a hint of them.
