The castle ruins of Kollmitz, well worth seeing, are enthroned on a rock high above the Thaya. The medieval complex was once one of the most important in Lower Austria, today you can still admire meter-high walls, two round towers and ramparts.

Kollmitz Castle was first mentioned in a document in the 12th century, then it was owned by various noble families, the Geras Abbey, and was left to decay around 1800 when the roofs, attics and false ceilings were removed. Many buildings in the area were built partly from stones and shingles from the castle.

Guided tours are carried out by appointment and there is also a snack station. You can find all information at kollmitz.at.

We paid 2 euros each at the snack bar for admission. If you want to go up to the keep or the hunger tower, you can get the keys for the towers here and from the top you have a wonderful view of the Thaya valley.

The castle ruins are made accessible and maintained by an association, information on how to support them can be found on the website. There is also a donation box in the courtyard.

      Opening times:

      All year round.

The museum, hunger tower and keep can only be visited during the opening times of the snack bar.

      Hunger tower:

Access is via an airy metal structure that may challenge those with a head for heights. The tower itself can be climbed relatively quickly using natural stone steps, and there is a viewing platform at the top.

      Keep:

The view is more spectacular here, you can see part of the castle from above and the Thaya loop. The climb requires surefootedness and a head for heights because there are no railings on the stairs.
