The castle, first mentioned in records in 1194, was sold to the brothers Christoph and Erasmus by Schneckenreith or Schneckenreither on April 24, 1543. This family died out in 1569. At an unknown time, the castle came to rule Drosendorf and is now owned by the Hoyos family.

Since Georg Matthäus Vischer has not captured the ruin Eibenstein pictorially unlike many other buildings in the vicinity, the local historian Franz Xaver Kießling considers it theoretically possible that the castle was already deserted during his lifetime. During the Thirty Years' War, however, the castle ruin is said to have been inhabited at least temporarily.

In various legends, the last owner of the castle Eibenstein is associated with the Knights Templar and the castle finally devastated by rebellious farmers.
