Bike Touring Highlight
A prehistoric and early historical settlement of the Dollnstein area has been proven many times, for example by finds that prove iron smelting in the Hallstatt period. The important Roman road led through the municipal area from Weißenburg (Großkastell, Markt) via Treuchtlingen, where a connection to the west followed, via Dollnstein with an Altmühlfurt or bridge, there was possibly also a connection to the Danube, further via Nassenfels (Markt, Administrative headquarters) to Großmehring / Pförring, where there were Danube crossings. Remains of a Villa Rustica have been found in Dollnstein.Source / more information:

The picturesque Dollnstein lies in the nature park Altmühltal at the beginning of the Urdonautals. The two rivers, which today are called Altmühl and Danube, here created by their erosion work at their confluence the vast, particularly attractive Dollnsteiner basin.
