The Gertraudis chapel on the Hundsrück near Gerolzhofen dates from around 1700 and probably had a previous building. However, due to the lack of meaningful sources, the early history of the chapel remains incomplete and sometimes even contradictory. After the chapel threatened to fall into disrepair, it was renovated by a community initiative and is now a jewel that invites visitors to prayer and contemplation.

Saint Gertrude of Nivelles, (also: of Karlburg) was a daughter of Pepin the Elder and Itta of Nivelles. When her mother died in 652, she became head of the monastery she had founded in Nivelles - but is not referred to as an abbess in any source. Above all, Gertrud endeavored to educate young women, had books brought to her from Rome and was an excellent expert on the Bible. Gertrude's date of death († March 17, 659 or 653 in Nivelles in Belgium) is identical to that of Patrick of Ireland. Tradition has it that Irish monks who came to Nivelles predicted the date of Gertrude's death.
