Water extraction tunnels for the Rammelsberg mine

    Translated by Google •

      June 30, 2025

Behind a door lies the entrance to a 2.6 km long tunnel that drained the mine water from the Rammelsberg. The tunnel is arguably one of the most important late medieval and early modern mine workings in the Lower Harz and is also a structural testament to the political and economic transformation in Goslar. Begun in 1486 by Saxon miners on behalf of the city of Goslar, the tunnel excavation was initially halted for decades. The reasons were a lack of funds and military conflicts between the city and the Dukes of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. This concerned the sovereign rights to the Rammelsberg, which the city council had acquired in the 14th century and lost again in 1552 through the "Riechenberger Treaty." In 1585, Duke Julius of Wolfenbüttel completed the tunnel, later named after him, thus enabling the development of deeper deposits.
