From Central Station there are international trains to Hamburg, long-distance trains to Aalborg and Copenhagen, regional trains to Struer, Herning/Skjern and Esbjerg and light rail to Odder, Lisbjerg, Lystrup, Mårslet, Ryomgård, the University Hospital and Grenå.

The first railway station in Aarhus was opened in 1862.
The construction of the current station building in 1927–1929 was part of a larger construction project that significantly changed the area around the station. It was chief architect K.T. Seest, who was responsible for the overall planning of the station and its surroundings. Aarhus Central Station was built in a neoclassical style and is a cul-de-sac.

The buildings around Banegårdspladsen were demolished and replaced with new ones. All of the new buildings were built from the same yellow brick and at the same height, so that the area now presents itself as a harmonious whole.

The station has 6 platform tracks.

In 2003, the Bruuns Galleri shopping center was added to Aarhus Central Station. The train station and Bruun's Gallery together form the framework for an indoor area of around 140,000 square meters.
