The viewpoint is not far from the place where some of the birds of prey air shows take place

The Oleftalsperre in the Eifel National Park near Hellenthal was built between 1954 and 1959 for the benefit of flood protection and drinking water production. It was not officially commissioned and the first full damming up until 1965. Its concrete pillar cell dam wall is unique in Germany. There is only one other pillar dam in Germany, but it belongs to the subgroup of arch dams, the Linachtalsperre. The Oleftalsperre is part of the Eifel-Rur water association.

Other purposes of the dam are to raise low water levels, provide service water and generate energy.

The shortest circular route around the reservoir is 13 km long.
