The Dreiborn plateau in the Eifel National Park is a unique ecosystem with a mixture of open land, heathland, forests and species-rich meadows. Due to decades of military use, the area remained largely untouched by intensive agriculture, allowing many rare animal and plant species to survive.

In August 2024, several wolves were confirmed in the national park region around Schleiden, including by photographs.

Hiking

Large parts of the area were off-limits to civilians between September 1946 and 2006, and have only since been reopened to hikers via designated routes.
In the long term, this area will become a forest again.
