The Voßgätters Mühle is one of the oldest mills in the Essen urban area. The Voßgätters Mühle nature and youth center was opened in 1985, and in 2011 the mill was taken over by the NABU Nature and Youth Center Voßgätters Mühle e. V. association.

The mill was operated by various tenants until 1916 and then acquired by Krupp. 12 years later it was transferred to the city of Essen. In the 1950s the mill wheel was dismantled and the weirs removed.

Until 1959, grain, mussels and crabs were ground into animal feed. Since 1960 the mill has stood empty and was used for a time as a storage room and a printing shop. The buildings were saved from imminent demolition by the citizens' initiative.

In 1982 the NABU began renovating and restoring the building. Since then the listed building has been used by the NABU-Ruhr as a youth center.
