The British military cemetery (Heverlee War Cemetery) is located next to the municipal cemetery of Heverlee. After the liberation of the Leuven region in September 1944, the '101st British General Hospital' was set up in the nearby girls' school of Heverlee. Those who did not survive the hospital were buried in a provisional cemetery. From July 1946, Heverlee War Cemetery was established as a collective cemetery for the dead from the provisional cemetery at the hospital, but also for the dead from numerous other cemeteries in the wider area. The cemetery was designed by Philip Hepworth. The cemetery now has 989 dead from the Second World War. In addition, there are also 29 identified dead from the First World War (perk 11), originating from 10 smaller cemeteries where the preservation of their graves could no longer be guaranteed. The British Expeditionary Force was involved in the later stages of the defense of Belgium following the German invasion in May 1940 and suffered many casualties during the withdrawal to Dunkirk. Commonwealth troops did not return until September 1944, but in the intervening years many airmen were shot down or crashed during attacks on strategic targets in Belgium, or while returning from missions over Germany.

The original cemetery of Heverlee was on the other side of the lane. It was used after the liberation for funerals of the 101st British General Hospital, which was then housed in the nearby Heverlee Girl's School. The current cemetery was constructed in July 1946 and was used for burials brought from a wide area.

The cemetery now contains 977 Commonwealth war graves from the Second World War, 37 of which are unidentified. There are also 29 graves from the First World War that were brought to the cemetery from the Municipal Cemetery of Wetteren, the Cemetery of Gouvy, Linerle, the Municipal Cemetery of Uccle, the Boneffe Cemetery, the Municipal Cemetery of Luttre, the Municipal Cemetery of Anderlecht , the Municipal Cemetery of Sclayn, the Municipal Cemetery of Tubize and the German Military Gerozstein. Cemetery, where their safety and maintenance could not be guaranteed.

In addition to the Commonwealth graves, the cemetery also contains the graves of an American and 11 Polish airmen.

The cemetery was designed by PD Hepworth.
