"Once founded by Bernhard von Clairvaux and managed by Cistercian monks, the Himmerod Abbey is still a place where you can experience faith and spirituality alive. There is something special in the air here. Let your gaze be captivated by the impressive monastery church, which was built in 1751 in the It was built in the baroque style and exudes an almost magical atmosphere.
The monastery businesses invite you to browse and discover. In the small art and bookshop you will find not only theological literature with a focus on peace and contemplation, but also works by the Himmerode monks and products specially made in the abbey, such as abbey beer, monastery liqueur, mustard and honey.
The monastery nursery opens every year on March 1st and has a wide range of young vegetable plants, perennials, herbs and bedding plants. The monastery fishery is also worth a short detour. Fish had a permanent place on the menu of the Cistercians, so that fish farming in Himmerod has a centuries-old tradition. Fresh fish from the monastery ponds is still served today in the monastery restaurant, which invites you to delicious, regional dishes at the end of the day in Himmerod.
The "Alte Mühle" museum is located in the oldest building in the abbey. It houses an enamel collection and a bronze collection. Temporary exhibitions are regularly held on the ground floor of the "Alten Mühle".
