While the city of Soest accepted Luther's teachings in 1531, the situation in Welver remained confused for a long time. The monastery remained Catholic, the St. Albanus and Cyriakus Church was subordinated to the Protestant community. The abbess Maria-Elisabeth von Aldebruck had a new church built next to the old one in 1697-1700, which was named after Bernhard von Clairvaux. The abbess's coat of arms can still be found above the columned portal of the old monastery building. This building was also created under the direction of Maria-Elisabeth von Aldebruck. The visitor to Kirchwelver still gets an impression of the former size and power of the Cistercian monastery, as most of the listed buildings from that time have been preserved.
