Eckernförde Old Town

The old town with its narrow streets and restored fisherman's houses is located between the harbor and the beach. The Rathausmarkt, the cultural center of the city, has largely been preserved in its buildings after the Second World War and offers a historical backdrop for the weekly market and other events. Kieler Straße became a pedestrian zone. In the old town there are many attractions to discover.

Eckernförde has a beautiful beach and is also very lucrative for shopping in the city center. In the season, however, it is a bit more complicated to find a parking space.

The name of the over 700-year-old town of Eckernförde is derived from beechnuts (the fruits of the common beeches that grow here, hence the squirrel) and Voerde, Lower Saxon for ford.
