The Sourbrodt Fens owe their name to a man named Johann Sourbroidt. In 1534, he built an inn on the edge of the Fens. This led to the founding of the village of Sourbrodt, and ultimately, the adjacent Fens took their name from this. The inhabitants of Sourbrodt mined peat in the Fens. Traces of this peat mining can still be seen today in the Sourbrodt Fens.
