This walking bridge is located on an unpaved path that was part of the Brieversweg in the Middle Ages, a name mentioned in documents as early as 1300. The Brieversweg ran from Sint-Kruis to Sint-Laureins through the domains of the Count of Flanders. The steward who had to collect the rents from these domains was a 'letter'. These rents were paid in kind and were transported via the Brieversweg to Bruges, where they were stored in a 'spijker', a grain warehouse, of the Burg van Bruges.
