The Römertal landscape protection area serves to protect the scenic, floristically and faunistically interesting floodplains of the Neumarker and Schönfelser Baches, which are part of the Flora-Fauna-Habitat (FFH) area "Bachtäler im Oberen Pleißeland" and are part of the European network of protected areas NATURA 2000.

With the protection of the landscape, the preservation and protection of the landscape structures, the sloping forests and grassland communities bordering the stream meadows, the arable land and copses on both sides or the tributary valleys with their wet areas and small standing waters and the floristic and faunistic biodiversity in this area are preserved.

The varied woody structures and wet biotopes provide a habitat and food source for native birds, insects and amphibians in particular. The determining and formative landscape elements of this area include, above all, the slopes of the two above-mentioned creek meadows, which are planted with copses and small forest areas, which developed in the course of the largely individual farm use on the non-cultivable slopes along the creeks and ponds. The large number of spring bloomers to be protected on the southern slopes of the Schönfelser Bach is impressive. For example, you can find the blue-violet glowing liverworts, the tall cowslip, the spring vetchling, the golden star, lungwort and last but not least the wood anemone.
