Since the end of the 15th century, believers have been making pilgrimages to the Maria Linden Pilgrimage Church in Ottersweier. Located on the old Roman road that runs through the Rhine Valley, a chapel may have stood at the "place of the seven linden trees" as early as the 8th century, looked after by the brothers of the Schwarzach monastery.
The miraculous discovery of an image of the Virgin Mary in the hollow of a linden tree led to countless believers making pilgrimages here to see the miracle and to pray.
