Together with the Ammersbek lowlands, the Duvenstedter Brook and the Wohldorfer Wald, the Hansdorfer Brook forms a landscape unit and at the same time the largest contiguous nature reserve complex in the Hamburg area. Thanks to the efforts of nature conservation, the marshy and swamp landscape, which has been partially rewetted, has been able to develop in a natural way over the last few decades. Due to the species-rich animal and plant world, it is of national importance, and for some bird species even of international importance. The Brookland has long been a conservation concern. While parts of the 780-hectare Duvenstedter Brook have been under protection since 1939 and the current boundaries since 1958, the 275-hectare Hansdorfer Brook was declared a nature reserve in 1981. The approximately 350-hectare Ammersbek-Niederung nature reserve was designated in 2002.

A nice NSG, with a little patience and luck you can watch different animals or listen to their sounds
