Together with the Ammersbek lowlands, the Duvenstedter Brook and the Wohldorfer Wald, the Hansdorfer Brook forms a landscape unit and at the same time the largest contiguous nature reserve complex in the Hamburg area.

Thanks to the efforts of nature conservation, the marshy and swamp landscape, which has been partially rewetted, has been able to develop in a natural way over the last few decades. Due to the species-rich animal and plant world, it is of national importance, and for some bird species even of international importance.
