The Massenei is an approximately 1,500-hectare forest area east of Dresden, which borders on the fields of Kleinröhrsdorf, Großröhrsdorf, Bretnig, Frankenthal, Großharthau, Schmiedefeld, Seeligstadt and Arnsdorf. It is a landscape protection area, local recreation area and is used for forestry purposes.

The mass egg extends to the south of the loess-covered granodiorite hills of Großröhrsdorf and Bretnig over a remarkably flat area at 280 to 300 m above sea level. NHN. Wide-spread troughs and very gently sloping slopes as well as isolated very flat bulges with a maximum difference in height of ten meters break up the plain. The forest also represents the watershed between Steinbach (Große Röder) and Goldbach (Schwarze Röder).
The oldest spelling of the mass egg, popularly called Mastche, from 1512 is Masteney.[1] The name Massenei could be derived from the Upper Sorbian word mjeza for border.[2] A connection with the Middle High German mastunge (= place for pig fattening) and the forest fattening for pigs (Masterei) is also likely. Maps show an upper and lower Schweinsgrundweg near the valley of the Schwarzen Röder.

In 1557, under Elector Augustus, a fence was erected from Großröhrsdorf through the Massenei to Stolpen to prevent game from escaping during the hunt. With the construction of the Moritzburg hunting lodge by August the Strong, Stolpen Castle and with it the hunting ground of the mass egg lost its importance, but the Saxon sovereigns continued to organize hunts until 1892. Since 1971, the number of wild boar has increased significantly.[1]

In times of war, the mass egg served as a place of refuge for the residents of the area. On August 11, 1929, the Waldidyll excursion destination west of the Bornematzenbrücke, which no longer exists today, was inaugurated. On June 23, 1935, the mass egg bath was inaugurated. From 1961 to 1991 there was an NVA anti-aircraft missile site at the Kleiner Stern crossing area in a 360-hectare restricted area. Their team building then served for years as a temporary home for asylum seekers.[3][4] Today, the crossing at Kleiner Stern is the starting point for a nature trail. The associated club building burned down in November 2011.[5] In 2013 it was rebuilt as the WaldHaus Kleiner Stern. The legend hiking trail also leads over the Kleiner Stern. It starts at the mass egg bath
