"...The spa town of Manderscheid is primarily famous for its two medieval castle ruins, which stand directly opposite each other on steep mountain spurs not far from the town's narrow streets. These once imposing structures, destroyed in several wars during the 17th century, are separated only by the Lieser River, which carves a spirited path through the densely wooded, rocky landscape in the valley. A meadow stretches between the castles, which—equipped with a barbecue hut—becomes a perfect spot in summer for a break while hiking the Eifelsteig trail or for a family picnic with children.

These imposing, meter-thick walls weren't always so romantic and full of carefree fun and games. Both served as fortifications in the conflict zone between the Electorate of Trier and the Duchy of Luxembourg. The enmity ran deep, and the two sides eyed each other suspiciously across the narrow valley. The freely accessible upper castle, with its five-story keep, still has a martial appearance today. The lower castle..." It can be explored with guided tours – even at night – or on your own; it only remains closed in bad weather. It was expanded into a magnificent, fortified manor house in the 12th century by the noble family of the Lords of Manderscheid. ..."

The ultimate postcard motif. And there are a few spots to take photos from.

From high up on the Lieserpfad trail, you have a great view of the castle.
